Protecting Your Family When You Hire a Nanny

Hiring a nanny is increasingly common, but most families don't realize the insurance gaps this creates. Many assume their homeowners policy covers everything - it doesn't. And few ever think to ask what insurance coverage their nanny has.

The reality is that both you and your nanny need proper insurance protection to safeguard everyone involved - your children, your home, and the nanny themselves.

Insurance Your Nanny Should Have:

Even after you establish workers compensation coverage for your nanny, there's more to consider before entrusting them with your
children.

Personal Liability Coverage This coverage (found on home, renters, or condo policies) pays for injuries or property damage the policyholder causes. Since your nanny will spend significant time with your children and in your home, they need adequate personal liability
insurance.

Children are unpredictable. What if your nanny accidentally breaks something valuable while playing with your child? What if they accidentally injure your child during discipline or care?

We recommend nannies carry at least $1 million in personal liability coverage. Without it, you could be stuck paying medical bills or property damage costs yourself - or worse, having to sue your nanny to recover expenses. You may need an umbrella policy.

Personal Injury Coverage This optional coverage protects against libel, slander, or defamation claims. While it may seem unnecessary, in today's environment, misunderstandings happen. What if your nanny says something at a playdate that's misheard or taken the wrong way?

We recommend $1 million in personal injury coverage, which is surprisingly affordable to add to a home, renters, or condo policy.

Auto Insurance (If They'll Drive) If your nanny will use their vehicle to run errands or transport your children, verify they have sufficient bodily injury coverage. This pays medical bills if the driver causes an accident that injures someone else - including your child.

Standard minimum coverage is far too low given today's medical costs. We recommend nannies who will drive have at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident in bodily injury coverage.

​If They'll Drive Your Car Add your nanny as a driver on your auto policy to ensure coverage. Also verify your own auto liability limits are adequate to cover potential accidents.

Your Required Coverage: Workers Compensation Before worrying about your nanny's insurance, make sure you're compliant. If you employ a nanny working more than 16 hours per week, you're legally required to carry workers compensation insurance.

This coverage pays medical bills and lost wages if your nanny gets injured or becomes ill on the job. It also includes employer's liability insurance, which protects you if your nanny claims your negligence caused their injury.

Even if your nanny works a few hours a week, you should still get coverage. Without it, an injured nanny can sue you directly for their
expenses.
